CAPOLAVORI DALLA CITTÀ PROIBITA. QIANLONG E LA SUA CORTE (MASTERPIECES FROM THE FORBIDDEN CITY)20th November 2007 – 20th March 2008 With this exhibition the Fondazione Roma wished to pay tribute to the Celestial Empire of ancient China and its highest period of splendour that coincided with the long reign of the Emperor Qianlong from 1736 to 1796. Thanks to important loans from the Palace Museum in Beijing the story was told of a flourishing period and an enlightened ruler who was open to European scientific and cultural knowledge. The connection between the East and the West is demonstrated by Giuseppe Castiglione, the Jesuit who became an official painter of Qianlong’s court.
